torque tightening
In principle, there are two tightening methods: "uncontrolled" and "controlled"
Controlled tightening: Using calibrated and measurable equipment, according to a pre-specified method, by trained personnel.
Uncontrolled tightening: using equipment or methods that cannot be measured. Apply preload to the bolt and nut assembly using a hammer and wrench or other type of striking tool.
Advantages of controlled tightening
1. The bolt load is known, controllable and accurate. Using a tool with a controllable output, calculations are used to determine the desired tool settings.
2. The bolts are loaded evenly. This is especially important on joints with sealing gaskets, as uniform compression is required for the gasket to be effective.
3. Safe operation according to the predetermined method. Eliminates the dangerous action of manual uncontrolled tightening, requiring operators to be skilled and follow the prescribed methods.
4. Shorten operating time and improve productivity. Replacing manual labor with controlled tools reduces tightening time and operator labor.
5. Results are reliable and repeatable. Known results are consistently achieved using calibrated and tested equipment, adherence to prescribed methods, and skilled operators.
6. Get the correct result once. Eliminates much of the uncertainty of bolt failure in operation by ensuring proper bolt assembly and tightening.
torque tightening
1. What is torque?
Torque is a measure of the amount of force acting on an object to turn it.
2. What is torque tightening?
A preload is applied to the fastener by turning the fastener's nut.
3. Torque tightening and preload
The amount of preload that occurs when torque is applied depends largely on the friction effect.
4. There are mainly three different "torque components"
4.1. Torque of extension bolts
4.2. Torque to overcome friction in bolt and nut threads
4.3. The torque to overcome the frictional force at the nut hole plane (bearing plane).
Lubrication reduces friction
Lubrication during tightening reduces friction, reduces bolt failure during installation, and extends bolt life. Variations in the coefficient of friction can affect the amount of preload achieved at a specified torque. The higher the friction, the less torque value is converted into preload. To accurately achieve the required torque value, the value of the coefficient of friction provided by the lubricant manufacturer must be known. Lubricant should be applied to the bearing surfaces and threads of the nut.
